But the one thing virtually all kids have in common is their love of fun and their imaginations. Not everything you teach your kids has to be fun, but there are definitely times when fun reading games are the perfect teaching tool.

Whatever you can do to have your kids associate reading with something fun and positive is a powerful weapon in teaching reading.

Some kids are just born readers. They don't need any additional motivation to pick up a book. But some kids need that extra boost and fun reading games can do the trick.

Are you stuck because you don't know where to start or what to teach? Finding high quality games that teach children how to learn to read can be a great solution. The good ones have been developed by educators in a logical structured way to ensure reading success.

What are the benefits of reading games for kids?

  • Helps improve memory

  • Boosts mental capacity

  • Sharpens critical thinking skills

  • Sparks creativity and imagination

  • Opens them up to new ideas and new worlds

  • Improves self confidence

  • Improves spelling abilities, vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency

What to look for when searching for games to teach reading:

  • Are they teaching skills in a logical way so that each skill builds on the previous one?

  • Are the games appropriate for their age and learning style?

  • Do they allow your kids to progress at their own pace?

  • Do they include reward systems to help build your child's confidence?

  • Are they interactive so that your kids are engaged and excited to learn?

  • Are they safe?

  • Do they allow for participation by parents and teachers?

  • Do they teach skills such as alphabet order, spelling, phonics, vowel and consonant recognition, rhyming, word endings, contractions, sight words, capitalization, or punctuation?

Special note to parents:
It's important to make sure you don't substitute reading games for actual reading. Even the best educational games should be a complement; not a replacement for reading books together.

Also, to get the best results, keep yourself in the game. Educational games shouldn't be used as a babysitter - get involved and play with your kids. Your kids love to spend time with you (at least when they're young) so take advantage of this and use your time together to teach them to love reading. Making the games a family affair can have a big impact.

The best reading games for kids will instill in your child a desire to learn and that is the key to success.
