• First and foremost, it has to be engaging and interesting for your kids. If they are bored or disinterested it’s like throwing money away. Find programs that offer phonics lessons in a friendly, animated, colorful way – and make sure it’s interactive to get your kids involved.

• Find a program that provides lessons tailored to your child’s individual needs. If it’s too easy or too advanced, your kids won’t get any benefit from the program.

• Once you purchase the program will you be expected to buy any additional materials such as books, membership fees, games, worksheets, or games? You should know in advance what the program includes.

• Does the program only teach phonics without any regard to sight words or reading comprehension? This is important because learning how to read a word without understanding what the word means doesn’t really have any value.
